Summer schools

A list of summer schools, including ones that are known to repeat annually, or ones that have happened in the past and may take place again.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD) Program is a 10-week residential program involving a lecture series, weekly seminars, and dedicated independent research. It has been running since 1959 and is widely recognised as one of the foremost summer programs for studying GFD. Applications are usually due in February for the program in the same year.

The Fluid Dynamics of Sustainability and the Environment (FDSE) summer school is an annual 2-week course held in alternating years in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), University of Cambridge and École Polytechnique in Paris. It addresses fluid dynamics generally, but with a particular focus on flows in the environment, particularly oceans and atmosphere. There is a substantial laboratory component to the course. Last known: May 2024.

The Advanced Climate Dynamics Course (ACDC), run by researchers at the University of Bergen, is a two-week course that brings together researchers thinking about a particular climate problem from a wide range of perspectives, including paleo, contemporary, theoretical, observational, geological, atmospheric, oceanographic, cryospheric. The course takes place in a different place each year, and usually in some far-flung places, such as Disko Island or Newfoundland. Last known: August 2025.

The International Centre for Theoretical Physics hosts regular “summer schools” on Theory, Mechanisms, and Hierarchical Modelling of Climate Dynamics in Trieste, Italy. These are rather more like annual workshops, but they encourage the attendance of students and early career researchers. Last known: May 2025.
